Cambridge International A-levels and the International Baccalaureate (IB) are accepted by all UK universities for all undergraduate courses. Grades, subjects and additional entry criteria (if any) required can be found on all UK university/college websites on the specific subject web pages. For international students there may be some variance in the grades listed in certain circumstances.
The South African National Senior Certificate is also accepted for entry to most UK universities. The IEB and SA government exams are both acceptable at the present time.
South African Qualifications:
A Brief Guide to UK entry requirements
Please note that overseas qualifications such as the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) are accepted by almost all UK universities for most subjects at undergraduate level. However, in making admissions decisions, much will depend on the following:
Undergraduate/College Admissions
What field you wish to apply for in the UK
What subjects you studied for your NSC
What grades you achieved
Life Orientation will not be counted. Decisions will be made based on your other 6 subjects.
Please note that it is extremely difficult to get into Oxford or Cambridge with the SA NSC. The same goes for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science (these being amongst the toughest subjects to get into in the UK). We can advise you of excellent 6th form A-level colleges in the UK should you wish to prepare for Oxbridge entry or these fields.
There are many different types of universities and colleges in the UK so in most cases we can find somewhere to suit students of differing capabilities. There is no exact conversion table for each and every A-level requirement though some universities may compile their own equivalents which you can find on their websites. Each application is considered on its individual merit. Before submitting any application we will have a very good idea of the chances of success of that application and advise clients accordingly.
If your grades are not sufficient to go straight onto a degree course or if you do not have the right school leaving subjects, we may suggest that you do an additional foundation year before starting your degree. You need to be aware that this would make your studies more expensive because a foundation year will cost almost the same as a full year of degree course studies. This means you will be paying for 4 years of study and living expenses rather than 3 years.
Postgraduate Admissions
There are many different entry levels for postgraduate study in the UK. For taught postgraduate courses (which is what we deal with), entry requirements vary enormously.
A taught postgraduate degree with a more vocational element to it, e.g. an MA in Marketing Management, may be more prepared to accept students with a good 3 year degree from a university in Southern Africa. A more academic postgraduate degree, e.g. MA English Literature, may insist on an honours degree from a Southern African university. Certain courses may require some work experience while others may regard a strong statement of purpose as really important to the success of your application.
At the end of the day, all cases will be considered on their individual merit.
Almost all PG courses applied for will require two references. As a rule academic references are required, but there are some courses where work references may be accepted.
As entry requirements vary a great deal it is best to check with us as to what your chances might be. Once we know for sure that you have the funding available for study in the UK at international fee rates, we will advise you appropriately as to whether we think it is worth you applying for a particular course.
